  • Profile

Sara Carrigan is an Australian Professional cyclist and the current Olympic Road Race Champion.

Born September 7, 1980 in Gunnedah, New South Wales, Sara's cycling career commenced in 1996 at the age of fifteen after being identified through a High School Sports Talent Search.

Currently riding for the Belguim-based LOTTO-BELISOL LADIESTEAM (LBL), Sara is based in Europe from March through October, returning to her home town of the Gold Coast at the close of the Pro Tour Calendar.

Her greatest success to date has been victory in the 2004 Olympics Women's Road race. With 30km of the 118km race remaining, Sara sensed the danger the lead group posed, and, in a race-defining move, bridged accross to the leaders on her own. At the start of the final lap Sara launched a solo attack, with only Judith Arndt of Germany able to respond. The two riders held a slender lead of around 18 seconds over a defiant and exclusive chase group. With the whole World watching the closing kilometres of an enthrawling race, Sara displayed all the class, skills and supremecy of an Olympic Champion. And the rest they say, is History.

Awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2005 Australia Day Honours List, Sara is also a multiple-receipient of the Australian Female Road Cyclist of the Year Award (2002, 2003, 2004).
